Shonen anime has exciting stories to follow, especially for fans of fighting. This is because they sell fight scenes to attract more viewers. From famous titles like Dragon Ball to newer series like Jujutsu Kaisen, the evolution of this genre can be read in the article I wrote previously (read here). Since shonen anime adapts from manga works—which are essentially comics—studios compete to adapt these works into anime with high-quality animation and visuals, especially during battle scenes or fight sequences. This makes viewers interested in the results of these adaptations in anime form. Therefore, I will share my recommendations for 5 shonen anime for those of you who love battle scenes. Read on until the end!
1. Jujutsu Kaisen
If you're looking for fight scenes with choreography that's truly satisfying to watch, Jujutsu Kaisen might be the answer. The studio that adapted it, MAPPA Studio, has done a truly excellent job in my opinion. They adapted the manga panels, especially the fight scenes, bringing them to life even though the manga panels were just static images. For example, a three-page fight sequence in the manga was adapted and animated into a beautiful and satisfying five-minute choreography. Also, what makes the action stand out is the fast-paced, technical, and strategically thought-out tempo of the fights. The power system in this anime, which involves cursed energy, domains, and various techniques, allows for fights with a unique structure.
2. Demon Slayer
If you want battle or fight scenes that are easy for viewers to follow, featuring sword fighting styles that are still impressive and beautiful, Demon Slayer might be the anime for you. The studio that adapted the manga of the same title into an anime is Ufotable. This studio is well-known even among fans. All anime produced by Ufotable studio are always “god-tier,” meaning their quality is unquestionable, very polished, and a feast for the eyes. The battle scenes are especially impressive. In my opinion, the manga itself isn't that great, but after being adapted into an anime, it became an animation with “god-tier” quality.
3. My Hero Academia
This one is probably for battle enthusiasts who enjoy a variety of unique powers. This anime features characters with diverse abilities, known as Quirks. Each character's Quirk ability can be used in various ways depending on the user's fighting style. Because there are so many different types of powers, even the supporting characters are unique and get their moment in the spotlight. The creative use of Quirks by each character makes the fight scenes more varied.
4. Hunter x Hunter
If you're looking for battles that require strategy before acting and don't hold back, you might want to watch Hunter x Hunter. This anime has tactical battle sequences, where even the slightest carelessness can lead to fatal consequences. This makes viewers feel the intensity and tension of the battle sequences. Rather than battles that are simply a contest of strength, the fights often depend on planning, deception, and creative application of the “Nen” system. In my opinion, Nen is one of the most understandable, logical, and universal power systems in anime, allowing characters to develop abilities defined by their personalities and limitations. This results in battles that feel unpredictable and intense. The conflicts in the Chimera Ant arc, the Yorknew City arc, and the Greed Island arc show how the series presents battles that always keep the audience feeling tense and excited in every arc.
5. Naruto
This popular anime has quite an epic battle sequence, combining martial arts moves and close combat such as hand-to-hand fighting. Set in a ninja world, the anime's power system is chakra, which can be used to create various stunning moves (Jutsu). What I highlight the most is the chunin exam arc, in the battle between Rock Lee and Gaara. That fight was the one that amazed me the first time I watched it as a child. Rock Lee's fighting style, which is hand-to-hand close combat, even though his opponent is a jinchuriki, who certainly has very powerful techniques.
Those are the 5 shonen anime for those of you who enjoy epic and well-executed battle scenes. The anime I mentioned above are purely my personal opinions, so if you have your own preferences, feel free to share them in the comments section below.
